Patrick’s Spirituality
Patrick calls us to return to a way of praying in the power of the Holy Spirit, that is frequent, expectant and intense:
|
|
full of the Holy Spirit
|
|
|
using the gift of praise
|
|
|
in intercession to the Father
|
He tells us when he was in captivity:
“All the time, my faith was being strengthened through the Holy Spirit. I experienced such lightness of being, that I could find me at prayers a hundred times every day, and nearly as often at night, ... The Holy Spirit had taken a complete hold of me.”
The Word of God
Patrick relied on Jesus the Word made flesh. The Scriptures were treasured by the early Irish Church. The Word calls us to share our faith with neighbours:
|
|
we are Witnesses to Jesus
|
Patrick Encourages us to be Good News
“For the Scriptures say that we are Christ’s Letter for salvation to the ends of the earth, not admittedly a letter penned in fine script, yet carrying the full weight of authority for all that.”
Communities of Prayer
Patrick formed communities of faith, based on local families. He brought the leader of the home to Jesus and all the household became Christian. (Acts 11:14, 16:15, 18:8)
St. Patrick’s Breastplate
Christ with me, Christ before me,
Christ behind me, Christ in me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ on my right, Christ on my left,
Christ when I lie down,
Christ when I sit down,
Christ when I arise,
Christ in the heart of every man
who thinks of me,
Christ in every eye that sees me,
Christ in every ear that hears me.
The Teaching of St. Patrick
Patrick’s faith is profoundly Trinitarian. We profess our faith in the One God, of three-fold sacred name: we worship him.
God Our Father
“There is no other God, past, present or to come, than the Father who has always been, without beginning; from whom is all beginning; holding all things together.”
Jesus My Saviour
“He became man, and when death had been overthrown, was taken up to the heavens to be with the Father, who gave him all power over every thing that can be named on the earth, in the heavens and in the underworld. Let every voice confess to the Father that Jesus Christ is Lord and God.”
The Holy Spirit
“And God lavished the Gift of the Spirit on us, the guarantee that we would inherit with Christ, and live forever. For it is this Spirit who forms those, who believe and are obedient to God, into His children.”
The Irish Church founded by Patrick, adopted a clear, Trinitarian, Holy Spirit filled spirituality. It created a people, who for 7 centuries was the most fruitful and evangelistic in the whole of Europe. We are invited to examine our spiritual roots.
